CMS Information on the Public Health Emergency and Medicaid Unwinding |
Earlier this month, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) shared additional information on its plans for the COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) and Medicaid and CHIP continuous enrollment unwinding. As a reminder, during the COVID-19 PHE, CMS eased rules to prevent people with Medicaid and CHIP from losing their health coverage during the pandemic. When the COVID-19 PHE eventually ends, states will be required over time to restart eligibility renewals for all people enrolled in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). This process is often referred to as the "unwinding."
While we do not yet know when the Public Health Emergency will end, CMS is providing information to ensure providers and state partners are educated and prepared for when the unwinding occurs. CMS has created a set of tools for partners to learn more about the PHE unwinding and assist with information sharing with their networks.
The Unwinding Homepage is the centralized location where states and stakeholders can learn more about unwinding and access resources to help them plan and prepare. On this webpage, you can find the Unwinding Communications Toolkit available in English and Spanish as well as a set of fillable graphics. CMS has also created a Medicaid and CHIP Beneficiary Resource page for people enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP to help them prepare to renew their coverage when states restart eligibility renewals after the end of the Public Health Emergency.
Additionally, CMS and HHS are hosting a Medicaid and CHIP Continuous Enrollment Unwinding partner education webinar series on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Recordings and transcripts from past webinars can be found on the National Stakeholder Calls Webpage.
