ASAM Seeks Comments on 4th Edition of the ASAM Criteria

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) is currently seeking stakeholder and clinical feedback on the updated and proposed ASAM Criteria 4th Edition. The proposed and preliminary 4th Edition of the ASAM Criteria summary was drafted following review of feedback from a diverse stakeholder survey released in March 2021 that examined what is working well in the implementation of the ASAM Criteria, what barriers or challenges they have faced, and what can be improved in the next edition. Major updates proposed for the ASAM Criteria 4th Edition include:

  • Updating the continuum of care to reflect the evolving treatment system;
  • Better integration of withdrawal management services into the continuum of care;
  • Encouraging improved continuity of care along the continuum;
  • Better Implementation support for the ASAM Criteria Standards with a specific focus on improved collaborative treatment planning;
  • Updating the standards to reflect evolving priorities of the field including better health care integration;
  • Incorporation of treatment of individuals with cognitive impairments across the continuum;
  • Support for better communication of Medical Necessity;
  • Support for implementation for justice-involved individuals and behavioral addictions; and
  • More complete standards and decision rules for adolescent treatment.

 ASAM is hoping to publish the 4th Edition in 2023. ASAM is seeking input from stakeholders to understand any potential unintended consequences for providers, treatment programs, state and local policy makers, health plans, patients, and families.
